A Dream Within a Dream By Alex Trinh

Today I turn 360 months young. And I must say it’s been quite a ride.

Like most people who’ve been through this checkpoint, I did the following exercise, I googled “where should I be by 30?”. I was then flooded by a bunch of lists to the likes of “30 goals you need to accomplish by 30”. Luckily for me, I scored 0/30 on most of them.

I don’t own a home, I’m not married, nor do I have kids. However, I do manage to live in a pretty nice place, I’m in a very healthy relationship and I have a six month old puppy.

Does that count? I’m not sure…

The point being those types of lists and expectations are everything I believe to be wrong with today’s society. If you were to ask anybody about their dreams, you’d most likely get following answer: “I’d like to be a millionaire by the time I’m *insert age*”.

The pressure that you need to be in a certain place by a certain time frame is completely bogus. It’s the same pressure you’ll get at the age of 18, 21, 25, 30  and probably even 40. I know I fell into that trap in my 20’s…

I was Harry Styles in Dunkirk… Just a self-absorbed kid trying to survive, preoccupied with looking for others’ approval.

However, this past year, I got really lucky.

I had my best friends and loved ones really come in clutch and pull me out of the suck. They helped me find purpose again… How? By telling me to dream again. I truly believe it’s the most important thing. Without dreams, there is no purpose… and without purpose… there is no living…

So I thought long and hard and about what my dreams were (and I’m not talking about shallow dreams measured in vanity, like I had in my 20’s) but my real dreams; more like when I was 10 years old. And I came up with the following: I wanted to be a Power Ranger, a Street Fighter, a Pokemon trainer, a wrestler and an X-men. Bottomline, I wanted to save the world and inspire people.

My dream is to help kids dream again, to become the modern day fucking Peter Pan.

My purpose is to become Batman, a selfless hero saving the world without the need for recognition. So I’ve decided that for the next 10950 days…

I will do exactly that… I will do my best to save the world…

How? By creating a place that helps people dream again; a place I wish existed 12 years ago.

That place is called Totem Academy; the real-life Neverland.

Forever Young.

Stay Tuned...
